When it comes to eating a diet to improve eyesight, you don’t have to limit your diet to traditional eye foods such as carrots, broccoli and Spinach. As a matter of fact, you can satisfy your taste buds and improve your eyesight at the same time by eating sweet and refreshing grapes. Therefore, if you would like a break from boring traditional foods for better vision, and you would prefer a delicious but healthier alternative to improve your eyesight, here are some reasons to make grapes a regular part of your diet:
Not only are grapes a low calorie and nutritious fruit, but according to research conducted by the University Of Miami, grapes are good for protecting your eye health due to the fact that they can prevent blindness later in life.
An interesting scientific research study revealed that grapes protect eye cells from a harmful process that negatively affects eye health called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is defined as the development of harmful free radicals that lead to the destruction or breakdown of healthy eye cells in the retina.
This research study revealed that the antioxidant rich nutrients in grapes help to protect the retina from these damaging compounds, thereby protecting eye health. The results of this study are far-reaching in terms of the vision health potential of grapes. The retina consists of cells that respond to light called photoreceptors. These photoreceptors are responsible for vision functions such as color perception and visual acuity (sharp eyesight). The preservation of the health of the retina can prevent vision problems related to blindness later on in life. The impairment of the function of the retina is one of the causes of vision loss and blindness. However, the antioxidant nutrients in grapes, if eaten regularly, can prevent this eye problem.
A research study was conducted to determine the positive health effects of grapes on the vision health of mice in the presence of high oxidative stress. Two groups of mice were included in this study. The first group included mice that were fed a diet rich in grapes. While the second group included mice that were fed a diet that did not consist of grapes, but a diet that had an equivalent amount of sugar to the diet the first group of mice were fed.
The results revealed that the mice given a grape enriched diet improved their retinal health significantly. Even in the presence of high oxidative stress, the mice given a diet rich in grapes maintained the health of their photoreceptors and the thickness of their retinas improved. The opposite was true for the non-grape diet mice. In this case, the retinal health of these mice deteriorated significantly. Their retinas were damaged, there were holes and lesions in that part of their eyes. Additionally, there was a 40% reduction in the thickness of their retinas.
This research study was spearheaded by Dr.Abigail Hackam. Here is a quote from Dr. Hackam about the findings of this research study: “These results are very exciting and build on the growing evidence that suggests a very real benefit for grape consumption and eye health.”
Grapes are not only low in calories but they are sweet and refreshing fruits that you can incorporate into your daily diet to improve your vision health. Groundbreaking research attests to this fact. Ultimately, these are good reasons to make grapes your favorite snacks for better eyesight and healthier vision for a lifetime.
